Whistler Olympic Plaza Welcomes Sprinting And Elbow-To-Elbow Action July 15

WHISTLER, BC July 4, 2011 – Kokanee Crankworx will open their world-class mountain bike competition on pavement and in the heart of Whistler Village with the new Fat Tire Criterium. High speed, elbow-to-elbow action will circle Whistler Olympic Plaza and Whistler Village as some of the best cross-country and gravity mountain bikers in the world compete for the cash and the glory.

“The last time Whistler played host to a Criterium was in 2003 during Kokanee Crankworx’s predecessor, the Whistler Summer Gravity Festival. Bringing this event a decade later in the brand new Whistler Olympic Plaza is incredibly exciting,” says Darren Kinnaird. “It’s all about speed, sprinting and attacks with riders railing corners and sprinting for the hole shot position. We are expecting around 80 racers to vie for top spot and to take home cash prizes.”

While Criteriums are generally raced on road bikes and are held on closed-off city centre streets, Kokanee Crankworx’s event is for mountain bikes only. The 800m loop around Whistler Olympic Plaza features multiple corners, a chicane and a straightaway for sprinting on each lap. This will be an awesome event for spectators and everyone is encouraged to dust off their 2010 cowbells and make some noise for the racers.

The Mass start, final-only event will be the ultimate exhibition of sprinting skills and speed, and adding to the excitement will be a “Miss and Out” format. At their discretion, officials will call laps where a random number of riders will be pulled off the course for crossing at the back of the pack until there are only eight racers left for the final laps.
